Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of the final launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis, and the last of 135 Shuttle launches in NASA’s history. This video, first released back in August of last year, is an oldie, but it easily ranks alongside this booster-cam footage as one of my favorite shuttle-themed videos of all time. If you haven’t seen it, you owe it to yourself to give it a watch. If you’ve seen it before, now’s the time to experience it again.
Seeing so many launches simultaneously is a uniquely powerful symbol of the strength, tenacity and curiosity that are so central to what it means to be human. And while watching all but one of these launches soar onward into low Earth orbit is a humbling reminder that we are not perfect, and that we are at times fragile, the collective whole is a stirring testament to the fact that we are brilliant, we are bright, we are resilient, and we are strong.
